Start together
Point to the first example and talk through it out loud. Once the direction makes sense, let your learner try the next one.

Use a finger before a pencil
For tracing and shape work, let children follow the path with a finger first. A crayon or thick pencil is often easier to control than a sharp pencil.

Stop while it is still fun
One short page is plenty. Finish by asking your learner to show you a favorite number, shape, or picture from the page.
