Change the settings
Before starting: Distinguish variables, coefficients, and constants and follow the order of operations.
After this: Simplify like terms, then use inverse operations in one-step equations.
Example questions
- Evaluate 3x + 4 when x = 5
- Simplify 2a + 5a
- Write an expression for three more than n
Settings in the builder
- coefficient range
- expression type
- variable values
Worked example
Evaluate 3x + 4 when x = 5.
Answer: 19
How to solve it
Substitute 5 for x: 3 x 5 + 4. Multiply to get 15, then add 4. Evaluation gives a value; it does not solve for a new x.
Common mistakes
What to check
- combining unlike terms
- forgetting multiplication between a coefficient and variable
Ways to review the work
- 1
Ask learners to name coefficients, constants, and like terms before simplifying.
- 2
Have learners read 3x aloud as three times x before substituting a value.
